How Many Solar Panels Do You Need for Your Home?

Work out the right solar system size and panel count for your home from your electricity bill in three steps, with a ready sizing table and roof space guide.

Too small a system and your bill barely moves. Too large and you pay for capacity you cannot use or may not be allowed to connect. The good news is that sizing a rooftop solar system takes three simple steps, and your electricity bill already has the key number.

Step 1: Find your monthly units

Look at your electricity bill for units consumed (kWh) — not the rupee amount. Tariffs, fixed charges and taxes make rupees a poor guide.

Consumption changes with the seasons, so check bills from both summer and winter if you can, and use the average. Your DISCOM's online portal or app usually shows a full year of history.

Step 2: Convert units into system size

A shadow-free rooftop system produces roughly 4.3 units per kW per day averaged over the year — about 130 units per kW per month. If you are new to how that power is generated, read How Rooftop Solar Panels Work.

System size (kW) = Monthly units ÷ 130

For example, a home using 400 units a month needs about 400 ÷ 130 ≈ 3.1 kW, so a 3 kW system is a sensible fit.

Step 3: Convert kW into panels

Divide the system size in watts by the wattage of each panel. Most modern residential panels are 540–600 W.

Number of panels = (System size in kW × 1,000) ÷ Panel wattage

A 3 kW system using 540 W panels needs 3,000 ÷ 540 ≈ 5.6, so 6 panels (giving 3.24 kW).

Adjust for these four factors

The formula gives you a starting point. A good installer then adjusts for:

  1. Future loads. Planning an air conditioner, an electric vehicle or an induction cooktop? Size up now. Adding panels later means more structure and paperwork.
  2. Sanctioned load. Many DISCOMs cap rooftop solar capacity at your sanctioned connected load. If your ideal system is larger, you may need to apply for a load increase first.
  3. Roof space and shade. Water tanks, stairwell rooms and neighbouring buildings cast shadows that move through the day. Shaded panels produce much less, so usable area may be smaller than the total roof.
  4. Subsidy structure. Under PM Surya Ghar, the central subsidy grows up to 3 kW and then stays flat. Systems larger than 3 kW still make financial sense for high-consumption homes, but the subsidy does not increase with size.

A worked example

The Sharma family's bills show 520 units in summer and 280 units in winter — an average of 400 units a month. They plan to add one more air conditioner next year.

  • Base size: 400 ÷ 130 ≈ 3.1 kW
  • Allowance for the extra AC: about +0.5 kW
  • Recommended system: 3.5 kW, or seven 540 W panels (3.78 kW)
  • Roof space needed: about 350–380 sq ft of shadow-free area

Frequently asked questions

Should I size my system for summer or for the yearly average?

Use the yearly average in most cases. Net metering lets surplus units from sunny months offset higher-use periods, depending on your DISCOM's settlement rules. Sizing for peak summer use can leave you with surplus you are not paid for.

Can I install a system larger than my sanctioned load?

Usually not without approval. Most DISCOMs limit rooftop solar capacity to the sanctioned load on your connection. You can apply for a load enhancement, which typically involves a fee and some paperwork.

What if my roof is too small for the system I need?

Choose higher-wattage panels to fit more kilowatts into less space, or use an elevated structure that frees the roof area beneath. If space is still short, a slightly smaller system will still cut a large share of your bill.

Is a bigger system always better?

No. Beyond what you consume, extra generation may earn little or nothing depending on your settlement rules. The best-value system matches your real consumption plus realistic future growth.
